The building sits on property once reserved by Joseph Ellicott, Buffalo's founder, for his private estate. The architects, DH Burnham & Company of Chicago, are well-known for heading the group of architects that designed the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, as well as for designing New York's Flatiron Building, among many others. Organized around a glass-covered interior concourse, the Ellicott Square Building was the largest commercial office structure in the world at the time of its completion in 1896. This photograph shows the entrance on the east side of the building.
